This project is in collaboration with Prof. Palli Thordarson (@pallithordarson), Prof. Ayusman Sen Penn State (@ayusmansen) and Prof. Dean Astumian UMaine (@DeanAstumian).
This ARC-funded project aims to understand the mechanisms behind the directed bulk transport of molecules by controlled diffusion and flow linked by chemical reactions and chemical concentration gradients. This project will provide the first detailed experimental data to test proposed theories and produce a fundamental understanding of how molecules can undergo controlled transport. Expected outcomes include a new understanding of how molecules can be guided toward their desired targets, which could have applications in waste collection or sensing by concentrating analytes, and for understanding biological processes.
Skills gained include: Organic synthesis, host-guest chemistry, NMR spectroscopy and microfluidics experiments, optical microscopy, data analysis including kinetics modelling.
Required: BSc/MSc with Major in Chemistry; some experience with synthesis; UV-vis spectroscopy; interpreting NMR spectra. A willingness to learn some python coding and microscopy techniques, such as confocal microscopy.
PhD program: At UNSW our PhD program is 3.5 years of full time research, with no coursework requirements.

· You must have the equivalent of a 4 year undergraduate degree, with at least 9 months of research and an examined thesis (equivalent to UNSW 1st Class Honours).
The available stipends will match the Australian Government Research Training Program scholarship (2022 rate = $28,854), plus relocation expenses.
