Student thesis (B.Sc/M.Sc) or internship in the field of Biosensor Engineering

The Cell Engineering research group at Helmholtz Munich (situated at the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI)) is seeking a motivated internship, bachelor or master student with an interest in protein engineering and molecular biology to help drive the development of novel protein-based biosensors for optical imaging to advance research in such diverse fields as cancer biology and neurobiology.

If you are interested in:
       High-throughput screening-based and rational (computational) protein engineering to merge innovative functions onto a single protein scaffold.
       Novel techniques for biomedical deep tissue imaging – especially, fluorescence and optoacoustic imaging (OA).
       Using protein biosensors for functional imaging of ions and small molecules in cancer and neurobiology.
       Protein biophysics and photophysics (i.e., fluorescence, spectroscopy, structural and chemical biology for molecular mechanism elucidation).

We offer:
       Interdisciplinary and international work environment
       Cutting edge methods at the border between biology, chemistry and physics.
       Individual supervision fostering skills for critical and independent work
       A career jumpstart at a leading research institute
       A topic with high chances of future scientific outcomes (e.g., publications).

Your tasks:
In this project you will make chimeric proteins and characterize them for their optical & optoacoustic properties. Specific tasks might include:
       Computational structural analysis and protein design
       Molecular cloning using standard techniques e.g., Gibson Assembly.
       Protein expression and purification using chromatography.
       Characterization using fluorescence/ UV-VIS spectroscopy and OA tomography
       Data evaluation and report in exchange with your supervisors

Your profile:
       You are enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology or similar.
       You are proficient in English
       The laboratory work for a thesis or internship should be conducted for a minimum duration of 3 months

       Send a brief letter of motivation and your transcript of records (including current academic situation), in English and in a single PDF file, via email to Dr. Andre C. Stiel (andre.stiel[ät]helmholtz-muenchen.de). Please indicate “Student thesis (B.Sc/M.Sc) or internship in the field of Biosensor Engineering” in the subject line.
